About InkTax

A printer's sticker price barely matters. Over its life you pay far more for ink or toner than for the machine — and the manufacturers know it, which is why the cheapest printers so often take the most expensive cartridges. That gap is the tax InkTax measures.

We rank every current consumer printer by a single number: what it really costs to print a page. Each printer's cost per page is the cartridge price divided by the manufacturer's rated ISO page yield, with laser drum wear folded in; color adds the cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges. The same calculation runs for every model, so the figures are directly comparable — no reviews, no sponsored picks, one honest number per printer.

InkTax is independent. Some outbound links to retailers may become affiliate links and earn a small commission if you buy — they never change a ranking, because every printer runs through the identical calculation.
