HP LaserJet MFP M140w Cost Per Page: Near the Bottom of the Mono Laser Pack
The HP LaserJet MFP M140w is a Wi-Fi mono laser that prints, copies and scans, selling for $190. Running it costs $6.53 per 100 pages in black, a rate set by its HP-141A toner cartridge, which costs $62 and is rated for 950 pages.
Its closest rival from another brand, the Canon imageCLASS MF264dw II, costs more up front at $229 but runs cheaper at $4.43 per 100 pages. The Canon also adds fax, a touchscreen and auto-duplex printing, none of which the M140w offers.
Within HP's own lineup, the M140w ties with the HP LaserJet M110w for 22nd of 23 mono laser printers on black cost per page. The M110w sells for $169 but drops copy and scan, printing only.
Brother's HL-L2400D undercuts it further: $120 to buy and $4.33 per 100 pages to run, with auto-duplex printing the M140w doesn't offer and a print speed of 32 pages per minute against the M140w's 21. The trade is Wi-Fi and the copy and scan functions, both absent on the Brother.
The running-cost floor for mono lasers belongs to the HP LaserJet Pro 4006dw, at $2.23 per 100 pages, but that machine costs $400 and prints only, with no copying or scanning. It runs far faster, too, at 47 pages per minute against the M140w's 21, and it adds auto-duplex, a touchscreen and Ethernet.
