HP LaserJet Pro 4006dw Cost Per Page: Print-Only, but Cheaper to Run Than Full-Function Rivals

The HP LaserJet Pro 4006dw is a mono laser printer that only prints — no copy or scan — but adds duplex printing, Wi-Fi and a touchscreen, and tops out at 47 ppm. It sells for $400 and runs at $2.23 per 100 pages in black. That rate traces back to the HP-161X toner cartridge, which costs $223 and is rated for 10,000 pages.

The 4006dw's $2.23 ties for 1st on black cost per page among the 23 mono laser printers InkTax tracks, a standing shared only with the HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4112fdw. That model matches the rate and the 47 ppm top speed but costs $650, and adds copy, scan and fax capability to the print-only 4006dw.

HP's own lineup drops in price fast: the LaserJet M209d costs $159 and the M209dw costs $199, and both come to $4.37 per 100 pages — far above the 4006dw's own rate. Neither has a touchscreen, and only the M209dw picks up Wi-Fi and Ethernet; the M209d goes without both. Both print at 30 ppm, well behind the 4006dw's 47 ppm.

Canon's imageCLASS MF462dw II costs $401 up front — essentially the same as the 4006dw's sticker — but costs $2.92 per 100 pages, a real step above the 4006dw's rate. It copies, scans and faxes in addition to printing, and shares Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a touchscreen with the 4006dw.

Brother's MFC-L2980DW undercuts the 4006dw on price at $335, but comes to $3.96 per 100 pages, a solid jump over the 4006dw's rate. It adds scanning, copying and faxing on top of print, and like the 4006dw, has Wi-Fi and a touchscreen.
