HP LaserJet M209d Cost Per Page: Tied With Three Pricier Siblings

The HP LaserJet M209d is a mono laser printer that only prints, with automatic duplexing built in. It sells for $159, and its running cost is $4.37 per 100 pages in black.

That per-page figure traces to the HP-134X cartridge, which costs $105 and is rated for 2,400 pages. Cartridges at that yield need replacing often for anyone printing in volume.

Three other HP mono lasers land on precisely the same $4.37 per 100 pages, a rate that ties the M209d for 15th of 23 mono laser printers InkTax tracks. The M209dw adds Wi-Fi and Ethernet for $199. The MFP M234dw and MFP M234sdw go further, adding copy and scan on top of Wi-Fi and Ethernet, for $239 and $279.

Among rivals, the Brother HL-L2400D sells for $120 and runs at $4.33 per 100 pages, close enough to the M209d's own rate to call the two essentially even. Like the HP, it does without Wi-Fi or Ethernet. The Brother HL-L2405W holds that same $120 price and rate but adds Wi-Fi while dropping automatic duplexing.

The running-cost floor among mono laser printers InkTax tracks belongs to the HP LaserJet Pro 4006dw, at $2.23 per 100 pages — well below the M209d's rate. It costs $400 up front and adds a touchscreen, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. It also prints far faster than the M209d, topping out at 47 ppm against the M209d's 30.
