The Canon PIXMA TS6420a is a Wi-Fi inkjet all-in-one that prints, copies and scans, with auto-duplex built in. It sells for $141. Running costs come to $8.88 per 100 pages in black and $23.21 per 100 pages in color, with the black figure set by the CN-PG275-BK cartridge — $16 for a 180-page yield.
Three Brother MFC-J machines edge it out on running cost: the MFC-J1260W, MFC-J1360DW and MFC-J1410DW all post $7.86 per 100 pages in black and $21.95 in color, a shade below the Canon's own rates. The $80 J1260W skips auto-duplex; the $110 J1360DW adds it; the $140 J1410DW throws in a touchscreen as well.
Two Canon siblings land on the TS6420a's exact rates. The TR4720 ($108) matches them while adding fax; the TS3722 ($60) matches them too, minus auto-duplex — a tie for 17th of 31 inkjet printers InkTax tracks on black cost per page, and 16th of 31 on color. The TR8620a ($216) prices higher but lowers those rates, to $7.75 per 100 pages black and $21.50 color, and adds fax and a touchscreen.
The cheapest inkjet printer to run, the Canon MAXIFY MB2720, costs $4.17 per 100 pages in black and $13.16 in color, well under the TS6420a on ink. It asks $216 up front, prints at 24 ppm against the TS6420a's 13 ppm, and carries fax and a touchscreen.
For heavy color printing, the tank-based PIXMA G3270 cuts running costs to $0.38 per 100 pages in black and $0.97 in color, far under the TS6420a's $8.88 and $23.21. It sells for $249 and drops auto-duplex, the trade for ink that costs almost nothing.
