Brother DCP-L2640DW Ink Cost Per Page and Cost to Run

The Brother DCP-L2640DW is a mono laser all-in-one — print, copy, scan — with duplex printing and Wi-Fi, but no touchscreen. It sells for $180, and running it costs $4.33 per 100 pages in black, the only color it prints.

That rate comes from Brother's TN830XL toner cartridge, priced at $98 for a rated 3,000 pages, with the cost per page also baking in wear on a $158 drum rated for 15,000 pages. The DCP-L2640DW also adds Ethernet, for a wired office.

Three Brother siblings land on that exact $4.33 rate. The HL-L2460DW sells for $160 but drops copy and scan, leaving only printing. The HL-L2400D, at $120, drops Wi-Fi and Ethernet; the HL-L2405W, also $120, drops auto-duplex. Across all three, the cost per page stays exactly $4.33.

HP's LaserJet M209 line runs a touch higher, at $4.37 per 100 pages. The M209d costs $159 with no Wi-Fi, the M209dw adds Wi-Fi and Ethernet for $199, and the MFP M234dw matches this printer's print-copy-scan set at $239. Function for function, the Brother is cheaper both to buy and to run.

The running-cost floor among mono laser printers sits further out: the HP LaserJet Pro 4006dw runs $2.23 per 100 pages, well under the Brother's rate, but it costs $400 up front, prints only — no copy, no scan — and adds a touchscreen the DCP-L2640DW lacks.
