Canon MAXIFY GX4020: Cost to Run Against Tank Rivals and a Laser Alternative

HP's nearest competing tank machine, the Smart Tank 7001, undercuts it on ink: $0.40 against $0.52 in black, $1.22 against $1.31 in color, per 100 pages. It also sells for less, $430 against the Canon's $540, though it drops both fax and Ethernet, features the GX4020 carries. Across every type InkTax tracks, the GX4020 ranks 20th of 97 printers on black cost per page.
The MAXIFY GX3020, also from Canon, sells for $432, well under the GX4020's price, but leaves out fax, the touchscreen and Ethernet that the GX4020 carries. Its ink rates match the GX4020's exactly, tying it for 19th of 30 ink tank printers on black cost per page and 18th of 30 on color.
The running-cost floor for ink tank printers, the Canon PIXMA G3270, runs $0.38 in black and $0.97 in color, per 100 pages, cheaper than the GX4020 on both, while selling for just $249. It skips fax, duplex, touchscreen and Ethernet, and tops out at 11 ppm against the GX4020's 18 ppm.
For buyers who never need color, the HP LaserJet Pro 4006dw offers a mono-only laser alternative: print only, without copy, scan or fax, but far faster, printing at 47 ppm against the Canon's 18. Its toner costs $2.23 per 100 pages, well above the Canon's black rate, and it sells for $400.
