HP DeskJet 2855e: Ink Cost Per Page and Cost to Run

The HP DeskJet 2855e is an inkjet that prints, copies and scans over Wi-Fi, without auto-duplex printing. It lists for $90. Running costs are steep for an inkjet: $15.00 per 100 pages in black and $33.49 per 100 pages in color.

That black rate comes straight from the ink: the HP-67XL-BK cartridge costs $36 and is rated for only 240 pages. Measured against the 97 printers InkTax tracks across every type, the DeskJet's black-and-white cost per page ranks 94th. Color fares no better, tying for 28th of 31 inkjet printers on color cost per page.

Within HP's own inkjet lineup, the Envy 6155e and Envy 6555e share identical running costs — $16.87 per 100 pages black, $39.36 color — at $140 and $180 respectively; both add fax and a touchscreen the DeskJet skips. Step up instead to the Envy Inspire 7255e and black drops to $10.50 per 100 pages, color to $27.12, with a duplexer, a touchscreen and a 15 ppm engine — twice the DeskJet's 7.5 ppm — for $200.

Outside HP, the Epson WorkForce WF-2950 undercuts the DeskJet on both fronts: $80 up front against $90, and $9.73 per 100 pages black with $29.64 in color, plus fax and auto-duplex the DeskJet doesn't have.

For a reader who prints enough to care, the Canon PIXMA G3270 resets the baseline entirely — a tank printer at $249 up front, refilled from bottles, running $0.38 per 100 pages in black and $0.97 in color. It skips auto-duplex too, but its rock-bottom ink costs leave the DeskJet, the Envy models and the Epson far behind.
