HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e Cost Per Page: Top Of Its Class, Outrun By Tanks And Lasers
The HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e is an inkjet all-in-one that prints, copies, scans and faxes from a touchscreen panel, and it sells for $230. Running costs land at $3.80 per 100 pages for black and $16.54 per 100 pages for color. The black figure traces to HP's own HP-923-BK cartridge, a $19 unit rated for 500 pages.
That black rate ties the 8135e for first among the 31 inkjet printers InkTax tracks on cost per page — a rate two pricier siblings, the $310 OfficeJet Pro 9125e and the $430 OfficeJet Pro 9135e, also hit. Widen the field to every printer type InkTax tracks, though, and the same $3.80 figure only lands the 8135e 42nd of 97, as laser and tank machines undercut it on toner and ink alike.
Canon MAXIFY MB2720, the cheapest inkjet among that 31-model class to run on color, prices color ink at $13.16 per 100 pages against the HP's $16.54 per 100 pages — though it costs more in black, at $4.17 per 100 pages to the 8135e's $3.80 per 100 pages. The Canon matches its fax, duplexing, Wi-Fi and touchscreen, and sells for $216 to the HP's $230.
For color-heavy printing, Canon's PIXMA G3270 tank printer costs far less to run: $0.38 per 100 pages in black and $0.97 per 100 pages in color, ink refilled from bottles rather than cartridges. It costs more up front, $249 to the HP's $230, and drops fax, duplex printing and the touchscreen, while printing at 11 ppm to the 8135e's 20 ppm.
HP's own LaserJet Pro 4006dw swaps ink for toner and drops color, copying and scanning altogether — it only prints. Toner runs $2.23 per 100 pages in black, and it moves faster too, 47 ppm to the 8135e's 20 ppm. It costs considerably more up front, at $400.
